Remember: you can only devour things smaller than yourself. But if you encounter a larger opponent, you can be devoured at any time.
Initially, your hole is very small, only able to eat small objects like trash cans, chairs, signs, or coins. Focus on eating easy things first to grow faster, then tackle larger items.
There are many other holes on the map. If they are larger than you, they can swallow you instantly. So, avoid them and focus on growing before confronting them.
When you are large enough, you can swallow almost anything and grow very quickly to gain an advantage. If you finish at the top of the leaderboard at the end of the match, you will receive many bonus coins to unlock and upgrade.
